Following the curves of the Mississippi River for 12 miles, the Carville Levee Trail runs southeast along an elevated levee from the neighborhood of Willow Glen through the neighborhood of Carville in the City of St. Gabriel.
After a short gap by the power station at the trail's northern end, you can continue north for almost 30 miles on the Baton Rouge Levee Bike Path.
Starting from its northern endpoint, the trail's surroundings are a mixture of farmlands and industrial plants. The majority of the trail has a crushed stone surface, but the final mile of the trail in Carville is paved. Although the end of the pavement marks the end to the Carville Levee Trail, an unpaved pathway continues south along the water.
The levee continues further south and east to New Orleans, and perhaps one day the entire route will be a finished trail. For now, however, the Carville Levee Trail offers a great, smooth pathway with traffic-free views of the mighty Mississippi River in the St. Gabriel area.
Parking is available off of SR75 between Besson Lane and Jake Lane. Visit the TrailLink map for detailed directions.
